Shazam, The Music Discovery App, Is Getting Its Own Game Show

Shazam — that app you probably used to figure out who Nico & Vinz are — is getting its own game show. In a branded take on the Name That Tune formula, contestants will try and identify music quicker than the app and each other.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Beat Shazam will pit contestants against one another to see who can identify songs the fastest. Then, the winner will square up against the app like it’s the world’s most specifically knowledgeable Watson (or a computerized Rob Gordon from High Fidelity) for a chance at the show’s grand prize.

The show comes from super-producer Mark Burnett (a.k.a. the guy behind Survivor, The Voice, Celebrity Apprentice and Shark Tank), so any doubts should probably be checked at the door. Burnett’s co-producing with Jeff Apploff, the mind behind the since-cancelled musical game show Don’t Forget the Lyrics.

Beat Shazam was picked up by FOX and no premiere date has been announced. The network has had a musical void in their programming after American Idol ended its slow shuffle toward oblivion. There’s no doubt that they want to get a share of the music-based competition niche that they — along with some absolutely massive help from Kelly Clarkson — helped legitimize and popularize.
