Ted Cruz Might Be A Huge Fan Of ‘The Simpsons,’ But The Minds Behind The Show Don’t Love Him Back

Presidential hopeful Ted Cruz is apparently a big fan of The Simpsons. He’s referenced the show before, using Homer’s thoughts on the IRS to mirror his own on Tax Day, but now he’s unveiled to the public what his favorite episodes are. The only problem is that he misquotes it in the process. From The Washington Post:

In an interview with The Federalist Radio Hour on Thursday, he was asked what his favorite episodes were. “You know, that’s a tough call,” he said. He mentioned two he loves: “Round Springfield” — in which one of Lisa Simpson’s favorite musicians, Bleeding Gums Murphy, dies and appears in a cloud with Mufasa from “The Lion King,” Darth Vader, and James Earl Jones — and “Treehouse of Horror VII” — in which the notorious line about moving forward not backward and always twirling towards freedom comes from.

Cruz recited the line, but messed it up. Instead of saying “twirling towards freedom,” he said “twirling into the future”

What an idiot! How do you expect to be president when you can’t even get a TV quote right! Election over and fandom revoked. He doesn’t even deserve this picture:

Actually, I think this is one of the first things I can personally relate to Cruz on. We’ve all misquoted something at one point, especially pop culture related things. You can check out the actual quote below in all of its video form.

The problem behind all of this is that the love isn’t too mutual from the folks behind The Simpsons. Al Jean replied to The Daily Beast and hit Cruz with a quote from the very same episode:

“To paraphrase Kang, ‘Ted Cruz?’ Go ahead, throw your vote away,” Simpsons showrunner Al Jean told The Daily Beast, using one of the senator’s favorite episodes against him. This much is to be expected.

That’s a slight burn. It always stings when the ones you love don’t love you back. It’s the kind of pain that might make one shut down the government again. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that, but maybe fill a few jugs with some water in case it does.
