Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘Lie Witness News’ Didn’t Work At Coachella This Year, And That’s Just Fine

Cue the think pieces about Millennials being the most honest generation. Why? Because a bunch of Coachella-goers finally broke the central conceit of Jimmy Kimmel Live‘s “Lie Witness News” segment by admitting that they hadn’t heard about the interviewer’s made-up bands.

Kimmel sent his team to Indio in an attempt to repeat the success of their Coachella “Lie Witness News” bit from 2013, but respondees either admitted that they hadn’t heard of the bands, or called the camera crew out on their bullsh*t. This is bad news for one of Kimmel’s most evergreen ideas, as the segment preys on people’s desire to appear knowledgeable. If people are willing to offer up an “I don’t know,” then the whole thing falls apart.

At least Kimmel was happy about this year’s failure to attract suckers.

“I have to say, I think this is progress. I think people are more honest now,” he said. “I feel like a modern-day Abraham Lincoln, I really do.”

It’s not like Chella-goers needed to make up for the lack of crazy performances. We’re talking about a fest that includes the disappointing return of Guns N’ Roses, a Kanye West stage-crashing, a reunited LCD Soundsystem whipping out a David Bowie tribute and a rare appearance by Kesha. Who needs Vegan Alternatives when you have all that?
