Alex Garland, the writer of such British genre classics as 28 Days Later and Dredd, and director of the recent sexy robot creepfest Ex Machina, is already onto his next project.

Garland’s next gig is reportedly the post-apocalyptic horror flick, Annihilation. The story concerns a biologist who ventures into a no-man’s land called Area X in an attempt to find her missing husband. While in Area X, she has to deal with dangerous contaminations, the disappearance of teammates, and a deadly animal known as “The Crawler.” Honestly, if you voluntarily go into a place called “Area X,” whatever happens is pretty much on you.

Garland wrote the script for Annihilation and will likely direct, and word is that he’s got a big name lined up to star as the plucky biologist. While it isn’t official yet, Natalie Portman is reportedly in negotiations for the lead role. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Portman play anybody other than Jane Foster from the Thor movies, but she’s set to come back in a big way, with two movies already slated for 2015.

Given Garland’s track record, I’m certainly looking forward to his next project. What about you?
