Even though it was technically possible, the Los Angeles Lakers never stood much of a chance against the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night, getting rolled to the tune of a 111-77 scoreline. And after seeing the Dubs’ beautiful machine firsthand, Kobe is a believer and then some.
Now that the Warriors have beaten the all-time record for most consecutive wins to start a season, it’s time to look ahead for the next milestone, and that seems to be the 1971-72 Lakers’ record 33-game win streak. So can they make it, Kobe?
“Yeah, they could do it – because they’re good,” Bryant said afterward. “It’s a very young league, and they’ve managed to put together a team of extremely intelligent players and extremely versatile players, and great shooters. And so I see no reason why they couldn’t continue to extend (the record).”
Before the Warriors get all the way to 33 wins, they’ll need to pass more recent milestones like the 2007-08 Rockets’ 22-straight wins and the 2012-13 Miami Heat’s 27-straight. That Heat team might actually be an apt historical parallel for this Golden State squad — a defending champion not content to rest on its laurels, and comfortably operating on all cylinders. And if Stephen Curry’s crew can fulfill the destiny of those Heat, that means we’re heading for another back-to-back champion.
