Scotty Pippen Jr., son of a Chicago Bulls legend, has taken the first steps to make his own basketball career a reality. Pippen Jr., a point guard prospect, announced on Friday he’s heading to the SEC.

Pippen reportedly had offers from Washington State, Colorado State, DePaul and UC Santa Barbara. He committed to the Commodores after a visit to Vanderbilt in early January.

ESPN considers Pippen Jr. a four-star recruit.

A 6-foot-1 point guard out of Sierra Canyon High School (California), Pippen Jr. is considered a four-star prospect by ESPN. He played for the Oakland Soldiers on the Nike EYBL circuit last spring and summer, averaging 15.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists over the 23-game season. Pippen Jr. also racked up 1.1 steals per game, while making just over 30 percent of his 3-point attempts.

According to 247Sports, Pippen picked the Commodores because of their need at point guard and the relationship he developed with the coaches there throughout the recruiting process.

“I picked them because I have a good relationship with the coaches,” Pippen Jr. said. “I like the school a lot. I think it’s a great fit for me academically and athletically. I feel like they needed me at the point guard position.”

As ESPN noted, Vanderbilt got highly-touted point guard Darius Garland in its 2018 class, but he injured the meniscus i his left knee and is a potential pick in this June’s NBA Draft.
