About That 3D Flash Gordon Movie…

Back in February, director Breck Eisner (The Crazies, Sahara) first started discussing details about his upcoming 3D feature remake of the classic Flash Gordon franchise. Well, for all nine of us who have been eagerly awaiting a status update since then, Eisner recently sat down with FearNet to catch everyone up.

Flash Gordon is a total passion project for me. We’ve just extended the option and the studio’s very committed in trying to make it happen. It’s just a gigantic 3D experience with years of prep, it’s one of those movies you get once in a lifetime to make and for me it’s been a passion of mine since I was a kid. If I could pick and just control everything I would love to make Flash Gordon, it’s really kind of my dream job, but it’s multi-year, in terms of writing and designing.

Well, so I guess the good news is that this project isn’t dead yet. Sounds to me though like “extended the option” is mustache-talk for “look, I’m kind of dragging ass on this one, you guys”. I hope I’m wrong and that actually this project is in fact receiving the meticulous effort that it deserves. Eisner promises that his new 3D Flash Gordon will in no way be anything like the 1980 feature version starring former Playgirl centerfold Sam J. Jones. News to which I say “Queen or GTFO!”.

Awesome trailer for the 1980 version below:
