While it may have a direct to series order at CBS and shouldn’t have much trouble locking down team members, casting is still very much underway for Greg Berlanti’s adaptation of Supergirl. While the show does have its lead in the form of Melissa Benoist, the supporting members surrounding Kara are still being sought out, and the latest is Supergirl’s mother, Alura Zor-El:
[Laura Benanti] will play Alura Zor-El, the birth mother of Kara. A strong noblewoman, Alura sends Kara to Earth to escape Krypton’s destruction. Her wisdom and guidance echoes across space and time, proving invaluable on Kara’s journey toward becoming Supergirl. (via Deadline)
The “across space and time” line makes it sound a lot like Benanti’s appearance in the series is going to be through hologram or video, similar to the way Superman’s father, Jor-El, speaks to him in various versions of the character. But, anything’s possible at this point as the show has a long way to go before premiering next season.
