Classism is the New Racism… – The Dream
The Dream is one of the many examples of why most artists these days should just make music and not try to make points. Classism has been around forever… ever heard of the Indian Caste System?? give me a break… Don’t try muddling the two because you water down how we should handle the situations. Donald Sterling is the direct example, He didn’t care that Magic Johnson is a multi-millionaire and wouldn’t have cared if he was a billionaire, he said what he said due to Race, not Class. therefore, there is a difference and both Classism and Racism are problems, just 2 separate ones that are both still prevalent today
while this isn’t as bad as Jay-Z saying that HipHop has done more for race relations than the Civil Rights movement, they are both examples that are one of those “stay in your lane” moments.
Actually classicism and racism are very connected bruh, and the control of $$ is one of the most effective tools used by racist. Sterling’s remarks would have held no weight if he wasn’t in control of so much $ and could limit the opportunity’s of minorities. If he was just another white southerner hick no one would care, except he controlled jobs and large amounts of money which effected the opportunities of others. A Mans personal views are irrelevant when not paired with the power and status large amounts of $ bring.
I don’t think the guy was saying they are not connected he just says they are different which is true Also, The Dream’s statement which substitutes one for the other actually highlights more of a difference than @onblast’s comment does. “Orange is the new Black” sure they are both colors and connected in that way but clearly orange and black are very different & that statement implies that black is the “old thing” and orange is the “new thing” highlighting the difference
Great point ROCA. Although I am tired of people saying “this and that” is the new black! Like, come on. Nothing will ever compensate or come close to the subjugation of black people for centuries. That is not me saying that black people should forever be bitter, make excuses or use their history as a reason to not further their cause, but leave it alone and give it the respect it merits. With regards to racism itself, it’s a difficult issue to take on from the point of view of blacks because they are fighting it from a less powerful position. Once blacks – including black nation-states – are able to accumulate enough wealth & power to compete mano a mano with the whites, then racism takes on a different dynamism. Also, I don’t feel the need for black people to try so hard to unite the average struggle of peoples of the world to his own, because too much black and too much love equals forever. We need to be our OWN brothers keepers and nobody else.
Regardless, it’s a great song! The Dream is a top singer/songwriter. MJ would have been proud of this!
