Wale’s ‘Reminisce’ Is A New Spin On A Classic

Wale is stepping on hollowed ground with “Reminisce,” daring to rap over Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth’s 1992 classic, “T.R.O.Y. (They Reminisce Over You).” My best friend said he’d rather listen to a Macy Gray a cappella album than be subjected to this, but on the real, it’s kinda tough.

It’s not a straight beat jack situation, as the sample is slowed down a bit and given a modern touch to allow Wale to do his thing, weaving in and out of bars like the seasoned vet that he is. Not recreating the original Mecca And The Soul Brother standout was a great idea, since he’s already going to invite those comparisons anyway. He made the track his own, which is the most you can ask of any MC.

“When they reminisce over you
Those be the last words I’ma tell this recording booth
Try not to fall in love but shorty be coming through
Her jeans and undergarments how I’m supposed to move?”

There’s an energy to this and his other recent material that shows he’s in a good place mentally and emotionally. Hopefully S.H.I.N.E. follows that same pattern whenever it sees the light of day.
