The Makers Of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Are Going To Extraordinary Lengths To Avoid Piracy

Don’t count on any major Star Wars: The Force Awakens spoilers leaking before the film’s official release on Dec. 18. That’s not to say nothing important will leak within the next month — the saying “where there’s a will there’s a way” springs to mind in this situation — but if it does happen, those leaks won’t be the fault of the people behind the scenes, at least if Disney and Lucasfilm have anything to say about it. As The Wrap reported today, the biggest blockbuster of the Christmas season won’t be releasing any screeners for awards that have deadlines before Dec. 18. The Force Awakens is expected to make enough money to build its own Death Star and clone Han Solo to pilot it if it wanted to, so awards buzz isn’t exactly at the top of the priority list when it comes to managing this semi-reboot of the franchise to success.

Given that major leaks are nothing new in Hollywood (hi there, Game of Thrones fans) it should be no surprise that Disney is keeping one of their most prized possessions under lock and key. Footage and plot details have thus far trickled out with military precision and with the exact perfect timing to keep fans wanting more. So far this strategy has successfully kept the pirates at bay (pun intended). But with the excitement surrounding the movie ratcheting up with every passing day, it’s only a matter of time before someone gets tired of waiting and finds a way to spoil the surprise for everyone. Actually, that point has almost definitely passed and it is a credit to the powers that be that there hasn’t been a leak already. Disney/Lucasfilm might have the reels in Carbonite until opening day if that’s what it takes to keep this on lock for the next five weeks.
