‘Godzilla: Resurgence’ Will Lumber Its Way From Japan To Our Shores This Fall

Godzilla is coming! (In a good way, not in a dangerous or pervy way.) As Hollywood takes its sweet time between their Godzilla offerings, Japan continues to be the world leader in giant monster filmmaking.

Toho has cranked out their 29th Godzilla motion picture in the form of Godzilla: Resurgence (a.k.a. Shin Godzilla in Japanese) which has lit up the domestic box office to become 2016’s current live-action gross champ in Japan. /Film reports that American audiences will have a chance to see the legendary gargantuan creature in U.S. theatres this fall, albeit for a limited time. Funimation Films will trot the skyline destroyer out for a one week engagement (October 11-18) at roughly 440 theaters. If you’re not fluent in Japanese, the English subtitles should do a lot of the heavy lifting.

Curious what’s on the table for Godzilla: Resurgence? Here’s how Funimation Films sums up the King of the Monsters’ latest trip to Tokyo:

It’s a peaceful day in Japan when a strange fountain of water erupts in the bay, causing panic to spread among government officials. At first, they suspect only volcanic activity, but one young executive dares to wonder if it may be something different… something alive. His worst nightmare comes to life when a massive, gilled monster emerges from the deep and begins tearing through the city, leaving nothing but destruction in its wake. As the government scrambles to save the citizens, a rag-tag team of volunteers cuts through a web of red tape to uncover the monster’s weakness and its mysterious ties to a foreign superpower. But time is not on their side—the greatest catastrophe to ever befall the world is about to evolve right before their very eyes.

That sounds incredibly stressful for everyone involved. Well, except for the audience who get to enjoy some sweet, sweet Godzilla action. Not just Godzilla soccer action, either! Although we’re fond of that too.
