Let’s Travel Down The Golden Globes’ Rocky Road To Legitimacy

Let’s raise a toast to the Golden Globes. It’s that special stop on the award tour calendar that somehow manages to play things more fast, loose and lubricated than its peers.

The latest edition of the Golden Globes (or GoGlos as no one calls them) is ready to bask in all things Hollywood and Hollywood Foreign Press tonight in Los Angeles. It’s a function that will once again feature celebrities collecting prizes in a swanky affair where their peers laugh, cry, and test the goodwill of the venue’s bartender. It’s a reliably fun place to be during award season, but it’s also a function where allegations of corruption have been a mainstay for decades. Heck, it’s an element of the ceremony that’s become part of the show.

As a public service, we’ve put together a fun-size 88 second video guide to why the Golden Globes has sometimes been called out for alleged misdeeds. The poster child for this? That would be Pia Zadora, who won the prize for “New Star of the Year in a Motion Picture – Female” and faced endless accusations of shenanigans over claims that her multimillionaire husband Meshulam Riklis bought off the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to make this happen. It’s a piece of Hollywood lore that Zadora still claims is false to this day.
