Just in time for Ben Hur to thud into theaters with all the excitement of a flan in a cupboard, Screen Junkies looks back at Gladiator starring Russell Crowe and directed by Ridley Scott. Oh man, remember when Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott made good movies together? Now Scott sticks primarily to sequels of his greatest hits and Crowe has turned into the South Park parody of himself, telling a Twitter troll, “Send me your address so I can visit you and explain my passions.”
But before Crowe was explaining his passions, he was “Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife.” As the now Emmy-nominated Screen Junkies points out in their honest trailer, that’s an awfully long catchphrase to print on a T-shirt. Maybe he could go with something more succinct, like “They see me Roman. They hatin’.” How’s that one sound?
Everyone’s a critic.
