Coldplay Revealed How David Bowie Hilariously Shaded Their Music

As we continue to mourn and remember the iconic musician David Bowie, this video from British rockers Coldplay follows suit with responses other artists have made in regards to his untimely death. However, it also includes a hilarious anecdote about Bowie that’s sure to provide a laugh.

While Coldplay bandmates Will Champion and Jonny Buckland discuss Bowie’s influence on their music (as well as reaching out to longtime collaborator and Bowie’s close friend, Brian Eno), the guys recall a moment when frontman Chris Martin contacted Bowie. Turns out Martin had hoped Bowie would sing on one of the band’s new songs. “We had a sort of David Bowie type character,” says Champion. “And I think Chris phoned him up, wrote him a letter and said, ‘Please sing on it.’ And he came back and said, ‘It’s not a very good song, is it?'”

“He was very discerning, he wouldn’t just put his name to anything,” Champion continues. “So I’ll give him credit for that.”

In the grand scheme of things, Coldplay probably isn’t sweating the lost opportunity too much. They’re playing Super Bowl 50’s halftime show, after all. Even so, that’s got to sting a little bit.
