While you were busy watching R U Faster Than a Redneck or tucking your daughter in at night (awful), D’Angelo and ?uestlove were gettin’ people pregnant with their music last night at a tiny bowling alley in Brooklyn. D’Angelo joined the Roots drummer, who performs a weekly DJ set at Brooklyn Bowl (amazing chicken there, by the way), in a low-key event dubbed “The Soulquarians: Brothers in Arms.” The only thing missing was Leonard.
Those in attendance were not entirely deprived of the D’Angelo experience, though; ?uestlove and D’Angelo arrived on stage much later than scheduled. “Y’all waited 13 years,” ?uestlove (wearing a “Free Pussy Riot” t-shirt) said, sensing the crowd’s antsiness. “You can wait another two hours.” The crowd heeled, and D’Angelo looked on from the bench behind his keyboard, content for Thompson to speak for him. “I wanted to recreate a moment,” continued ?uest, perhaps referring to the famous Voodoo sessions at NYC’s Electric Lady Studio which inspired the record, “We just jam and see what happens. D’Angelo played a mix of organ, keys, and piano, leading ?uestlove through covers like SOS Band’s “Tell Me If You Still Care”, Sly & the Family Stone’s “Let Me Have It All”, Prince’s “New Position,” Voodoo cuts like “Africa”, and new material. The music was punctuated by bursts of enthusiasm from the audience, energy that fed the musicians. “If y’all don’t make noise, you’re going to be waiting ’til 2042,” ?uestlove warned.
