James Corden Celebrated His Birthday By Singing Prince’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ With Coldplay

Whether or not you enjoy James Corden’s soft, Jimmy Fallon-esque style of humor, the guy has a lot to be happy about. People love his “Carpool Karaoke” segments, and sometimes you even hear murmurings about him taking over the Late Show from Stephen Colbert. That’s a discussion for another day, though. Right now, Corden is too busy singing Prince songs with Coldplay at the Rose Bowl.

Corden was celebrating his 38th birthday, so his buddies Chris Martin and company decided to make it a particularly memorable one for their fellow Brit. Coldplay invited Corden onstage at the massive Rose Bowl, which seats over 92,000 people, and together they performed the iconic Prince song “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

While Corden is a comedian, he has a background in music as well and knows how to carry a tune. Sure, he may not be Prince or Sinead O’Connor, but this bit of birthday indulgence could have been something unpleasant in the wrong hands.

The performance ended with a cake being brought out for Corden, then the crowd wished him a happy birthday through song. It may be difficult to be terribly enthused about rich, successful celebrities turning a concert into a birthday hangout, but they had fun! Plus, it’s never bad to get to listen to Prince, even if it is being sung by James Corden.
