Lady Gaga Openly Discussed Her Mental Illness For The First Time

Lady Gaga revealed that she suffers from PTSD in a segment on Today this morning.

In the segment, Gaga visited the Ali Forney Center in New York City. While at the community center that specializes in helping homeless LGBT youth, she told the kids at the center that she suffered from post-traumatic stress.

“I have a mental illness and I struggle with that mental illness every day,” she said during a meditation session at the center.

She clarified later in the segment when asked about the revelation by an interviewer.

“I told the kids today that I suffer from a mental illness. I suffer from PTSD,” she said. “I’ve never told anyone that before, so here we are.”

Gaga tweeted out the segment along with a message to her fans to not keep their struggles to themselves.

“Today I shared one my deepest secrets w/ the world,” she wrote. “Secrets keep you sick w/ shame.”

Lady Gaga has never been shy about speaking out for and reaching out to people who might be struggling or vulnerable. However, she seems to have ramped it up in the wake of her new album Joanne, easily her most personal work. Gaga — who is herself a survivor of rape — has felt compelled to explain what its like for women to live in a country that will soon have a a man with a very unclear understanding of what constitutes sexual assault in the White House.
