St. Vincent’s ‘New York’ Gets The Minimal Techno Remix Treatment From Kelly Lee Owens

A little over a week ago, Welsh artist and producer Kelly Lee Owens teased her Twitter followers by mentioning that she’d soon have a “collab of sorts” to share with the world. Now, the nature of that joint effort has finally come to light after Owens announced via Facebook Live that she has remixed St. Vincent’s “New York.” You can hear the song above.

Owens’ take on the Masseduction ballad is a darker, higher tempo affair. The beat moves at a hypnotic clip, honing in on the song’s first refrain. In a press release, Owens’ explained her inspiration for the remix:

“‘You’re the only motherf-cker in this city who can handle me’ – I could already hear the potential for a club track / drop at that moment… so to work on this remix was pure joy!! I wanted to show another side to Annie’s work, perhaps a littler darker, harder edged and show its potential to have life in the dance world.”

Rather than sharing the track outright when she made the announcement, Owens shared a video of the song getting cut to vinyl. In the clip, you’ll get an explainer about how a vinyl lathe works, while seeing and hearing it get cut in real time.

Owens’ self-titled debut came out last year and ranked highly on our list of the Best Electronic and Experimental Records of 2017. Meanwhile, “New York” is from St. Vincent’s most recent album, Masseduction, which found itself near the top of our list of the top albums of 2017.
