Despite being invited, along with longtime friend Patrick Stewart, to join Taylor Swift’s squad back in July, it seems there might be a little bad blood between the American singer and the British actor. That’s because, according to a recent interview with Gay Star News, McKellen was kicked out of his New York City apartment by Swift.
Actually, it technically wasn’t McKellen’s apartment to be kicked out of in the first place. The modernized hobbit hole belonged to The Hobbit director Peter Jackson, and Gandalf himself was merely squatting on the premises before Swift decided to purchase the place and go full Caddyshack:
GSN: How does it feel to be part of Taylor Swift’s ‘squad’?
McKellen: I’m not. When I was living in Peter Jackson’s apartment in New York, Taylor Swift bought it while I was there and I was thrown out before I wanted to leave! That hardly puts me in Taylor Swift’s team, does it? You look shocked.
GSN: We are shocked!
McKellen: [Laughs] She bought it, she had every right to — I was just lodging there for free! She did ask me to appear with Patrick Stewart at her show in LA, but I had something else to do that night.
“I was thrown out of Taylor Swift’s New York apartment!” headline to the contrary, McKellen wasn’t really thrown out of Swift’s apartment. He was actually tossed from Jackson’s, but never mind the latter — he’s too busy prepping his “extended cut” of The Hobbit trilogy for theaters at the moment.
Oh, and just in case you were wondering, the answer is a resolute “no.” As in, “No, I’m not sorry for the terrible ‘bad blood’ pun in the lede.
