The 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby went down on Saturday afternoon, and Nyquist (2-1 odds) won the race by 1 1/4 lengths. Nyquist came into the Derby as its favorite. Exaggerator (5-1) came in second, while Gun Runner (10-1) came in third. With the win, Nyquist – who was jockeyed by former Kentucky Derby winner Mario Gutierrez – took home $1.24 million.
Nyquist will attempt to become the second horse in a row to win the Triple Crown after American Pharoah won horse racing’s holy grail last year. Next up is the Preakness Stakes, which will take place on May 21. The odds for that race won’t come out for some time, but we like Nyquist’s chances – he is undefeated in his eight career races.
