ESPN’s SportsCenter Got Duped By A Fake Twitter Account And It Was Quite Amusing

Overnight, the Chicago White Sox reportedly made two additions to their pitching staff by signing free agent reliever David Robertson, formerly of the NY Yankees, and trading for the A’s Jeff Samardzija. With the pair of stories breaking in the middle of the night, it seems the person who runs the SportsCenter twitter may have been a bit groggy as they tweeted some misinformation regarding the Samardzija trade from a fake Ken Rosenthal account.

Some of those details are correct, but neither Chris Beck nor Trayce Thompson have been mentioned elsewhere as being part of the trade. It turns out the “Fox Sports” that was referenced in the tweet above was from an imposter Ken Rosenthal (can you spot the clever spelling in his handle?) which as of this writing has a grand total of 91 tweets and 3 followers.

Solid job, SportsCenter.

There’s a lesson in here I think. Don’t trust SportsCenter?

No, no, that can’t be it. The lesson of course is to make sure the person you’re following on Twitter for breaking news is spelling his name right.
