The Dallas Cowboys were really bad in 2015. Like “fewest wins since the 1989 season” bad. There are a bunch of factors as to why this was the case – namely injuries to Tony Romo and Dez Bryant that meant the team’s top QB and WR were Matt Cassel and Terrance Williams, along with the lack of a consistent running game for a chunk of the season while the team tried to replace DeMarco Murray. This led to a squad that went 4-12, good for last place in the NFC East.
Basically, it was a team that had no chance of sniffing the Super Bowl. This is something that really bothers the team’s owner, president, and general manager, Jerry Jones. During an interview on Sunday, Jones said that it killed him that he was in attendance for a Super Bowl that didn’t feature the Cowboys.
“I hate it,” Jones said. “I scream in my pillow when I go home at night when we’re here. I want to be here so bad, but it’s filling my bucket up.”
Jones is obviously a competitive guy, so while it totally makes sense that he would be a little less frustrated than usual that the Cowboys didn’t win the Super Bowl, it says a lot that this is eating at him. Then again, he was spoiled a little at the beginning of his tenure – he took over the team in 1989 and won three Super Bowls in his first six years – so it’s hard to feel too sympathetic.
The good news for Jones is that the Cowboys will bring back a healthy Romo and get a full season of Bryant in 2016. Plus the NFC East is still the NFC East, and with the No. 4 pick in the 2016 Draft, maybe the Cowboys can bounce back in a big way next year.
