Here’s everything you need to know: Zendaya Coleman (pictured above), who goes simply by “Zendaya” is an 18-year-old African American actress who has appeared on a few Disney Channel series as well as being the youngest ever contestant on Dancing with the Stars. On Sunday night, Zendaya attended the Oscars, which may have been her first time ever. She was probably really excited!

Well, E!’s always tactful Giuliana Rancic was on hand to put a damper on the evening for the young star, saying on Monday night’s Fashion Police of Zendaya’s red carpet look — which she appeared glowing in a white gown and gorgeous, thick dreadlocks — that she looked like she smelled like “patchouli oil or weed.” No, really:

For her part, Zendaya had a classy response, issuing the following statement. You can read it in full on Instagram, but here is an excerpt:

There is a fine line between what is funny and disrespectful. Someone said something about my hair at the Oscars that left me in awe. Not because I was relishing in rave outfit reviews, but because I was hit with ignorant slurs and pure disrespect. To say that an 18-year-old woman with locs must smell of patchouli oil or ‘weed’ is not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive. I don’t usually feel the need to respond to negative things but certain remarks cannot go unchecked.

At that point, Rancic went into “oh sh*t” crisis mode as media outlets started picking up on the story, tweeting the following lame apology on Monday night:

That wasn’t good enough for Kelly Osbourne, however, who aside from getting dragged into the fray is also a friend of Zendaya’s, so Rancic’s remarks were clearly not appreciated by her co-host, either. Osbourne tweeted her disapproval of the situation:

On Tuesday’s E! News, Rancic issued yet another apology, this time publicly:

Is that going to mend the situation? Who knows. Kelly seems pretty pissed (as she has every right to be), but it’s not like she’s got much going on besides Fashion Police to fall back on. In either case, this is me until the whole thing settles down:

UPDATE: We’re all good now, I guess?
