Canceling ’19 Kids And Counting’ Cost Discovery $19 Million

The Duggars are apparently broke and begging for donations, and now they’ve also officially cost Discovery millions. After canceling the show following the sexual misconduct allegations against Josh Duggar, Discovery was slapped with “content impairment charges” to the tune of $19 million — basically $1 million per kid. The cable network was slapped with similar charges after the molestation scandal surrounding Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo, which should teach Discovery to do more thorough background checks on the people they choose to exploit on television.

While I don’t claim to be an expert, it looks like impairment charges are imposed when a business — in this case, Discovery — suffers a decrease in the value of their goodwill. Being that Discovery is meant to promote family-friendly educational entertainment, featuring, promoting, and profiting off of a show that includes an alleged child molester would probably count for lowering goodwill points.

In a nutshell, it’s bad business to knowingly work with people being accused of child molestation. So… don’t.
