FX Has Unsurprisingly Renewed Donald Glover’s ‘Atlanta’ For A Third Season

People tracking the career of Donald Glover could be forgiven for forgetting about his groundbreaking FX series given his recent efforts this year, but his cable network home sure hasn’t. FX announced on Thursday night that the critically acclaimed Atlanta has been picked up for a third season.

It’s no surprise to anyone who has watched the Emmy-winning show, whose second season began airing in February to more rave reviews. But as Deadline reported Thursday, FX moved quickly to announce the show that Glover created and stars in will be coming back in 2019.

“Atlanta is phenomenal, achieving and exceeding what few television series have done,” said Nick Grad, co-president of original programming for FX Networks.

Atlanta debuted in 2016 and its first season netted Glover a pair of Emmy award wins, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. FX boasted the show had the highest ratings for any drama on cable in its second season in its order announcement. There’s no word just yet on whether the show will change its name again for Season 3: the second run of Atlanta aired under the title Atlanta Robbin’ Season.

Glover’s been busy already this year, with strong reviews for Atlanta coupled with his appearance as Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars movie Solo. His musical alter ego, Childish Gambino, also made waves with the stunning “This Is America.” Fans of Glover are certainly getting different opportunities to see his work, and with critics expecting more Emmy nominations for Season 2, they’ll likely see him on stage accepting awards for his work on the show soon, too.
