‘The Muppets’ Has Been Cancelled By ABC After Only One Season

Well, it turns out that people really don’t like thinking about Muppets having sex. After one rocky season, ABC has decided to cancel The Muppets. The show struggled from the beginning, with viewers not really connecting with the series. While the premise of a 30 Rock-esque workplace comedy was clever, it just never successfully merged that premise with the Muppet sensibility that we’ve come to know and love.

Despite getting meta with a hipster image consultant on the show, The Muppets just never found its feet. It had a few wonderfully funny moments, but it wasn’t enough to draw in viewers. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it ended its run with 1.9 rating among adults 18-49 and 5.3 million total viewers.

Perhaps it was meant to be. Fans did not take kindly to the Kermit and Miss Piggy break up, and many thought the tone was too cynical for the historically sunny Muppets. Still, this is surely not the final time we see Gonzo and the gang onscreen, so don’t lose heart, gentle readers. We’ll get another way to enjoy Jim Henson’s creations before too long. Until then, watch “Rainbow Connection” and think of better times before Denise. Ugh, DENISE.
