Keeping track video game releases isn’t as easy as it once was — the volume of games released each week is constantly expanding, and they’re spread over a mind-boggling array of platforms (consoles, PC, Mac, handhelds and mobile).
Well, I’m here to make things a little easier on you. Every week I’ll rattle off five games I think you should check out. These articles are not meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week — think of them as a nice rounded tasting menu. Each week I’ll try to highlight several games from different corners of the gaming landscape (handhelds, consoles, indie, PC, you name it) then finish up with a “Pick of the Week”.
Hit the jump for the five games you’re going to want to check out this week…
This Week’s Handheld Port
Limbo (PS Vita, June 4th)
Hey, you’ve got another chance to play that game all your most pretentious gamer friends were insisting you had to play back in 2010! Limbo always kind of felt like it should have been a handheld game, so it’s about time it made it to the small screen.
This Week’s Thing That May Or May Not Come Out
Penny Arcade Adventures: Episode 4 (PC & Xbox 360, June 7th)
Yup, those Penny Arcade On The Rain-Slick Precipice of Blah-dee-blah games are still happening. Starting with Episode 3 they changed developers and went with retro 16-bit Final Fantasy-esque graphics instead of the more, well, slick graphics of the first two episodes.
Considering how good the Penny Arcade guys usually are about getting the word out on every little thing they do, it’s been surprisingly hard to pin down whether this game is actually coming out on June 7th. Probably it is? Maaaybe?
This Week’s Indie
Gunpoint (PC, June 3rd)
This week’s indie is the cool-looking retro-styled stealth game Gunpoint. The game looks to give players an unusual amount of freedom to create their own solutions and well — just check out the trailer above. It’s hard to put the appeal of Gunpoint into words, but I think stealth fans will be interested once the trailer’s done. Download it here.
This Week’s Superhero MMO
Marvel Heroes (PC, June 4th)
There been surprisingly little hype surrounding Marvel Heroes, but it’s worth checking out, especially since it’s free-to-play. What do you have to lose? Well, except possibly your free time since the game is essentially Diablo with Marvel superheroes and has been getting some good reviews from people who got to play it in Beta form. Grab the game for free here.
Pick of the Week
Remember Me (PC, Xbox 360 & PS3, June 3rd)
We’ve been talking up Remember Me, in which you play as a tight pants sporting French ninja/mind rapist for a while, and now the game’s finally here! Reviews are a little mixed, but mostly positive. The general consensus seems to be that the game has its flaws, but they’re mostly rendered moot by the game’s interesting world, characters and mechanics. The game may not be perfect, but it looks like it’s worth a try, particularly following last month’s dearth of major releases.
Things are starting to heat up a bit as we move into summer! Planning to grab any of the above-mentioned games? Any games you’re itching to get your hands on that I failed to mention? Hit the comments and let everyone know.
