No matter how smart us big, tough adults think we are, little kids can sometimes be way more perceptive, and that’s why a 7-year old girl name Charlotte is quickly becoming an Internet hero. Last week, Charlotte wrote a letter to LEGO complaining that all of the building blocks intended for boys feature the little yellow characters off on wild adventures and performing awesome jobs, while the female LEGO characters are chillaxing at the beach or sitting at home, waiting for their bread-winners to come home from saving the universe.
Charlotte’s simple request? More adventures for girls, please.
Dear Lego company:
My name is Charlotte. I am 7 years old and I love legos but I don’t like that there are more Lego boy people and barely any Lego girls.
Today I went to a store and saw legos in two sections the girls pink and the boys blue. All the girls did was sit at home, go to the beach, and shop, and they had no jobs but the boys went on adventures, worked, saved people, and had jobs, even swam with sharks.
I want you to make more Lego girl people and let them go on adventures and have fun ok!?!

What’s really interesting about this is that Charlotte couldn’t have picked a more convenient time to point out this glaring difference between the boy- and girl-themed sets. Last week, we celebrated as the LEGO CUUSOO review board announced that Brett Waller’s awesome Ghostbusters 30th anniversary set would become a reality, but also being reviewed at the very same time was Alatariel’s “Female Minifigure Set,” which was designed with the very specific means of solving the complaints of girls like Charlotte.
Although recently LEGO® has started to design and add more female figures to their sets, they are still a minority. A small set of minifigures would provide a great opportunity to add women to our LEGO® town or city communities. I have designed some professional female minifigures that also show that girls can become anything they want, including a paleontologist or an astronomer. Being a geochemist myself the geologist and chemist figures are based on me:-) Due to the limitations of LDD the heads and hairstyles I used here are a bit limited. Ideally, Lego would use some ‘rare’ face and hair designs if they were to produce a set.
The good news is that while the other sets reviewed by CUUSOO were denied, the Female Minifigure Set, which received the 10,000 votes that it needed for consideration very quickly, is still being considered. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that this project will be approved, but it would probably make Charlotte one very happy little girl.
