Just as Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright” has become a protest anthem for Black Lives Matter, Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” has become a protest anthem in its own right — but for a very different cause.
Indian rapper Sofia Ashraf has repurposed the song into “Kodaikanal Won’t” to protest corporate giant Unilever’s dumping of mercury in Kodaikanal, India, where the company operated a thermometer factory and failed to clean up the resultant toxic waste. So far, 45 former workers and 12 of their children have died.
“Kodaikanal won’t step down until you make amends now,” raps Ashraf, in a video that also exhorts viewers to sign a petition against Unilever. If you’re moved by what you see, you can sign here.
