If you’re an environmentalist, this story is a tragic illustration of how man-made technologies can ruin an entire species. Fortunately, we’re not environmentalists, so we get to make jokes about beer goggles. Which happen to be somewhat literal, in this case.
Australian jewel beetles are, well, shiny, as you’d expect from something called a “jewel beetle”. Light reflecting off their brown wings serve as identification and mating cues.
We think you can guess what happens.
Yep, the bottle and its dimpled surface reflects light in the same way as a female jewel beetle. Which means the male jewel beetle fires up the Digital Underground and goes to town on the bottle, until he expires in the hot Aussie sun.
So…what you’re telling us, Australia, is that female jewel beetles are so bad in bed the male thinks she just lies there unmoving?
