Overheard at a recent Belvedere Vodka marketing meeting…
“Gentlemen, it’s getting tougher and tougher to sell vodka these days. The competition is fierce. Anyone have any ideas to increase sales?”
“More ad campaigns centered around rape jokes?”
“Brilliant!”
Reports the Atlantic Wire:
Belvedere Vodka is getting some much deserved backlash on social media after they posted an ad on their Facebook and Twitter pages Friday that seems to make light of sexual assault. The ad, which shows a guy wrestling a horrified looking girl, reads “Unlike some people, Belvedere always goes down smooth.” (“Go down,” just to be clear, is a pretty obvious double-entendre for oral sex.)
After deleting the ad on Twitter and Facebook, the company then offered up the following half-ass apology: “We apologize to any of our fans who were offended by our recent tweet. We continue to be an advocate of safe and responsible drinking.” Translation: “Oh hey, we’re sorry if you’re a little ninny who doesn’t appreciate our clever rape jokes.”
Look, Belvedere, do us all — more importantly yourself — a favor and leave the rape jokes to the pros on the internet.
