First of all, what the hell are Andy Richter and “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston doing in this photo taken in a commercial break during the filming of last night’s “Conan?” BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT I WANT TO KNOW!
Anyway, last night on Conan, Chris Hardwick — the host of g4’s Web Soup — talked about Comic Con, including the now-infamous “stabbing” Simon Pegg recently detailed to Conan, his mom joining Twitter, and why nerds will soon rule the Earth.
“When I was growing up, it was not cool to be a nerd,” Hardwick said. “But now even the red-neckiest of rednecks has a laptop, a DVR…Nerds make the shiny things that distract the mouth-breathers, and that’s why we’re powerful and will crush you.”
Now, I normally get annoyed when attractive, non-socially moronic people label themselves nerds — as if they need to co-opt it away from actual, real nerds — but Hardwick has kind of owned the nerd label for a while, I think. And his “Nerdist” podcast is one of my favorites among the few I listen to regularly. It was on Hardwick’s podcast, in fact, that I think Jon Hamm first outed himself as a bit of a geek, talking at length about his love for video games and how thrilling it was for him to meet Linus Torvalds, the creator of the Linux platform. Don Draper, uber-nerd…who’d have guessed it?
Anyway, here’s Hardwick’s interview with Conan…
