Juliana Lopez — a model, professional football player, and beauty shop proprietor — traveled to China this past week to acquire goods for her store. Shortly thereafter, her family lost contact with the 22-year-old beauty. Fearing the worst, they contacted the Columbian embassy, who learned that Lopez was being detained for smuggling drugs in her laptop. Officials have not said what kind of substances were smuggled, but have mentioned that it was a large quantity.
Lopez flew into the city of Guangzhou, where she was detained. She plays for the Divas del Futbol in Medellin, is a student at the University of San Buenaventura, and also recently won the Miss Antioquia beauty pageant with plans to enter the Miss World Medellin competition this week. Smuggling drugs in China is a serious offense, and the crime is punishable by death.
China reportedly executes more people each year than any other country. Newsweek said that in 2013 alone, China executed 2,400 people. The Colombian Foreign Ministry is currently helping to provide legal assistance for Lopez.
