‘Amazing X-Men #1’ And Other Comics Of Note, November 6th

Yep, Nightcrawler’s back. And it’s a hoot. A full review, plus looks at books from DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, IDW, Valiant, and Dynamite under the jump.

The short of it is that Nightcrawler is in heaven, and he’s not having a lot of fun. He has even less fun when his father, Azazel turns up. In a pirate ship. To conquer heaven. It’s that kind of book.

Jason Aaron actually has quite a bit of fun with the idea of Nightcrawler in heaven, and his introduction to the school of mutantkind is highly entertaining. He sketches in a lot of character and ideas quickly and often amusingly, whether it’s Iceman trying to deal with Warbird or the fact that the school is full of bamfs running around. Turns out the bamfs have been building something portal-looking; no guesses as to where that portal goes.

The book might have too goofy of a tone for some, but it’s lighthearted enough to be refreshing and it’s got the feel of a superheroic romp. Aaron’s dialogue is smart and Ed McGuinness’ art is lighthearted enough that it gives the book the snap of a good screwball comedy. Highly recommended.

So that’s one issue… what else is worth reading this week?

<!–pagetitle:Catacylsm: The Ultimates’ Last Stand #1–>

Welp, they’re screwed. Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley set out to wrap up the Ultimate universe with a bang, and so far Galactus has killed half of New York. One imagines the body count is only going up from there, but it’ll be curious to see how this plays out. More for Ultimate Comics fans, but definitely worth a look.

<!–pagetitle:Longshot Saves The Marvel Universe #1–>

Christopher Hastings does his best to do something with Longshot, but it doesn’t quite come together; the problem is largely that Longshot’s just, well, not that compelling a character. Not bad, but pretty much for fans and no one else.

<!–pagetitle:Alex And Ada #1–>

I really don’t want to kick this book’s ass just yet, because I think Jonathan Luna might be taking it some interesting places in future issues. It’s got a lot of potential. But to be honest, the plot is about a dude who gets a robot girlfriend, and the very concept has baggage. You can feel the book straining to avoid the… problematic implications of owning a girlfriend you can turn off, even if you didn’t want one, and Luna’s a smart enough writer that one imagines it’ll come up, and be dealt with, sooner rather than later. But the skeevy implications are still there, and the book is going to have to work hard to lose them.

<!–pagetitle:Regular Show: Skips #1–>

This book focuses on the seemingly zen and all-knowing Skips as he gets sucked into Groundhog Day. It’s a silly book that perfectly captures the show: If you’re a fan, you should pick this up.

<!–pagetitle:Legends Of Red Sonja #1–>

It’s a fun anthology book, but honestly, little about this stands out. Fun for barbarian fans, like yours truly, but if you’re not into iron-thewed high fantasy, this isn’t going to change your mind.

<!–pagetitle:Drumhellar #1–>

Alex Link and Riley Rossmo put together a book that… frankly doesn’t make one whole hell of a lot of sense, if I’m being honest, which considering how incomprehensible Rebel Blood was, isn’t some huge surprise. There’s a lot of references to drugs in here, and plenty of dream logic, but this feels a bit like we’re reading issue #6, not issue #1, and that lack of clarity and context detracts from the book.

<!–pagetitle:Protectors, Inc. #1–>

Man, is this book dull. It’s not just that it’s entirely setup, it’s that the setup just isn’t that interesting. Oh, in reality most superheroes would be self-involved douchebags? Gee, J. Michael Stracyznski, that’s not a concept we’ve never seen before. The uninspired art and design from Gordon Purcell and Mike Atiyeh doesn’t help matters, unfortunately. Give this one a pass; there’s plenty like it already.

<!–pagetitle:Painkiller Jane: The Price of Freedom #1–>

Jimmy Palmiotti’s superheroine is back and… literally has not changed since she was conceived nearly twenty years ago! As a result, the adventures of a Bisexual Wolverine Knockoff feels a bit too ’90s to really work, especially since the plot doesn’t really get into Jane’s superpowers at all; you’d be forgiven for thinking this is just a standard action book. It’s entertaining enough, but hardly revolutionary.

<!–pagetitle:Transformers: Dark Cybertron #1–>

IDW’s Transformers books continue to be goofily entertaining stuff. If you haven’t been following the books closely, or at all, there’s a lot of plot threads to pick up, ranging from Starscream being the freely elected ruler of Cybertron to… well, whatever the hell Rodimus Prime is up to. But John Barber and James Roberts write a fun throwback, and the art, by Phil Jimenez and Andrew Griffith, evokes the show while being, well, better drawn. Here’s a preview, if you need help deciding whether to pick it up.

<!–pagetitle:The Occultist #2–>

Tim Seeley and Mike Norton have a blast mixing Spider-Man and Doctor Strange into one very entertaining and bizarre little package. It’s a pretty clever and well-thought out book, and idea for fans of stories about superpowered teenagers that are a little more… shall we say… honest about what teenagers might actually be like. Dark Horse has a preview for the curious.

<!–pagetitle:Grindhouse: Doors Open At Midnight #2–>

Alex DiCampi and Chris Peterson continue their tribute to cheesy exploitation flicks. It’s… well, it’s pretty much what you’d expect from the cover. It feels a little too faithful to the dumber aspects of these movies to really be more than a comic about flesh-eating insect people. On the other hand, if you just want a comic about flesh-eating insect people, it’s pretty good. Here’s Dark Horse’s preview to see for yourself.

<!–pagetitle:Forever Evil #3–>

This issue finally follows through with the obvious setup; the Legion of Doom going up against the Crime Syndicate. It’s mostly a setup issue, although the Rogues do get into a fight that they’re not prepared for, but it’s still quite entertaining, not least because Geoff Johns knows his characters and there’s some great dialogue here. Worth reading for DC fans.

<!–pagetitle:Mighty Avengers #3–>

Al Ewing has a lot of fun with this book, and it’s rapidly becoming the best Avengers. And hey, Shuma Gorath is always fun. Highly recommended.

<!–pagetitle:The Star Wars #3–>

J.W. Rinzler and Mike Mayhew continue to turn out Star Wars weirdness. This comic, adapted directly from the original draft of Star Wars, is both familiar and utterly alien at the same time. Mayhew’s art is perhaps better than the source material demands, but it’s undeniably a fascinating book; Dark Horse has a preview up on their site, as usual.

<!–pagetitle:Baltimore: The Infernal Train #3–>

This latest Baltimore mini wraps up with, well, lots of vampires getting slashed, stabbed, blown up and shot. Pretty much what you’d expect; while it’s not exactly profound, it’s action packed and thus quite a bit of fun. On the fence? Have a preview.

Joe Casey’s amusingly bizarre riff on World’s Greatest continues with this anthology book. Of the stories, the Amazing Grace one is turning out to be the strongest, but they’re all entertainingly off-kilter superhero stories in their own way. Well worth picking up, and here’s a preview if you’re on the fence about it.

<!–pagetitle:Quantum And Woody #5–>

If you missed out on the first arc of this book, James Asmus launches a whole new one, and it’s possibly the funniest book you’ll read this week. Asmus takes an axe to all sorts of comic book cliches, ranging from abandoned warehouses to how Batman never gets a cramp, and it’s a hoot. Highly, highly recommended, and here’s a preview for those who want to try it out.

<!–pagetitle:The Victories #6–>

Michael Avon Oeming gets all conspiracy theory on us in his superteam book. The champions, accused of spreading a virus, have been locked up in prison, but needless to say, things aren’t really going according to supervillainous plan. It’s an interesting and dark take on superheroics, and worth reading.

Mike Costa’s slow burn of an espionage story goes hot in a big hurry, and shows off Costa’s facility with both character and action. Antonio Fuso and Emilio Lecce are perhaps more suited to the psychological aspects than the action scenes, but it’s still a fun book and one of the best on the stands, every month. Here’s a preview, to get a sense of what I’m talking about.

Valiant has an anthology book featuring four different tales of the Shadowman, and they’re all pretty clever in various ways. Ales Kot’s opening story and Neil Dvorak’s closing children’s nightmare are the standouts, but the whole book is a lot of fun, and perfect to pick up if you’d like to get on board with this series.

<!–pagetitle:Earth 2 #17–>

This issue centers around a fundamental question; who is this alternate universe Batman? Honestly, Tom Taylor is having a lot of fun with this alternate reality, and it’s a pleasant diversion from the main DCU if you’re looking for one.

<!–pagetitle:Action Comics #25–>

Greg Pak shows an early story of Superman, part of the Zero Year tie-in, that shows Clark learning that as powerful as he is, he can’t control everything. It’s a story we’ve seen before, but Pak writes it well and Aaron Kuder’s art is always welcome. Definitely worth picking up as a one-off.

<!–pagetitle:Detective Comics #25–>

John Layman, meanwhile, tackles an early story of Jim Gordon fighting the GCPD’s corruption. Layman’s been doing a superb job on this book, and this side story is a fun read in of itself. Even if you’re not following Detective, pick it up; it’s a fun little noir story.

<!–pagetitle:Green Arrow #25–>

Ollie has to tackle Killer Moth in Starling City, and we see how Ollie and Diggle first teamed up. As usual, Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino make a killer team, and this book is a lot of self-contained fun. For GA fans or those looking for a well-done superhero book, this is hard to pass up.
