‘Marvel Now What? #1’And Other Comics Of Note, October 22nd

There’s nothing quite like Marvel taking itself to task. And Marvel Now What! does it beautifully. A full review of the funniest book of the week, plus reviews of books from DC, Dark Horse, Image, IDW, Valiant, and Titan.

Marvel Now What! fits into the grand Marvel tradition of self-mockery with a series of stories taking potshots at everything from how Storm and Thor would get along (complete with sex) to the High Evolutionary explaining why, precisely, in his words, Marvel is “taking characters you know better than your own family and shaking them like bugs in a jar.” It’s savaging the hand that feeds, and every bit of it is glorious. If you’re a Marvel fan, pick it up.

So what about this week’s other books? Read on…

<!–pagetitle:Velvet #1–>

Ed Brubaker takes on James Bond-style espionage stories with this book, which is essentially Moneypenny from the Bond movies as a hard-bitten bad-ass. It’s got style to spare, and Steve Epting’s art is perfectly suited to the story. It’s not breaking much ground, so far, but it’s quite a lot of fun and definitely worth reading.

<!–pagetitle:Conan And The People of The Black Circle #1–>

Ariel Olivetti and Fred Van Lente are unleashed on Conan. Van Lente shows remarkable restraint, considering what he gets up to elsewhere, and Olivetti’s art is beautiful. If you’re a Conan fan, pick up this book, and if not, Dark Horse has the usual preview up to help you decide.

<!–pagetitle:Pretty Deadly #1–>

Kelly Sue DeConnick and Emma Rios spin out a weird, mystical Western that has a feel of Jodrowsky doing an anime, except with an actual plot. It’s not really clear where it’s headed, but it’s an engaging and beautiful book, nonetheless. Well worth adding to your sub list.

<!–pagetitle:Samurai Jack #1–>

Jim Zub and Andy Suriano bring back Cartoon Network’s cult classic, and it’s simultaneously faithful to the feel and art style of the show while putting their own spin on it. The result is a great, all-ages action comic that’s worth picking up whether you watched the show when it ran, or never heard of it before now.

<!–pagetitle:Ghost Cop #1–>

V.J. Boyd and Justin Boyd write a surprisingly solid and hard-edged noir. Christian DiBari’s art helps considerably, especially with the odd dream sequences, and overall this book is a pleasant surprise. Worth picking up for noir or horror fans.

<!–pagetitle:Zombie War #1–>

Kevin Eastman’s weird, cheesy zombie story about undead soldiers gets a reprint and a coloring. This… well, let’s say it’s interesting as a historical artifact, rather than a modern comic, and leave it at that.

<!–pagetitle:Infinity: Heist #2–>

Well, that went south fast. Blizzard, passing out at the end of the last issue, wakes up as a full-grade Inhuman, and decides he wants out of the central heist. Needless to say? Easier said than done. Frank Tieri and Al Barrionuevo make this a lot more complex than, say, the equally good but more comedic Superior Foes Of Spider-Man. Hell, it makes Whirlwind interesting, as a character. Well worth checking out.

<!–pagetitle:Sex Criminals #2–>

Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky continue their exploration of sexual attitudes and mores through the intellectual methods of dick jokes, forth-wall breaking, nudity, and parodying Family Circle comics. In short, it’s the second-funniest book on the stands and a joy to read.

<!–pagetitle:Rocketeer/Spirit: Pulp Friction #2–>

Mark Waid writes a Rocketeer/Spirit crossover. Do I need to say anything else?

Yes? Fine. Loston Wallace and Bob Wiacek mix Dave Stevens and Will Eisner’s styles quite well, making this book a pulpy, funny story that does right by both characters. If you love either, or both, it’s the most fun you’ll have this week.

<!–pagetitle:The Other Dead #2–>

Joshua Ortega and Qing Ping Mui continue the actually rather clever conceit of a zombie outbreak limited entirely to animals in a fun, gory way. That said, Mui’s layouts can feel a bit jumbled, making the book somewhat hard to follow. But the book is still an amusingly gory time that sticks to its concept well.

<!–pagetitle:DC Universe Vs. Masters Of The Universe #2–>

Ever wonder who’d win in a fight, He-Man or Superman? Well, this issue’s got the answer, and not in the way you might expect. Keith Giffen and Tony Bedard have a lot of fun with this crossover; Evil-Lyn hitting on Constantine should not be this funny. That said, Dexter Soy is better at pencils than inks and it does hold the book back a bit. Still, fun for fans of both.

<!–pagetitle:Kiss Me, Satan! #2–>

This issue is a bit zippier than the first, which helps mitigate the cheese, and Juan Ferreyra’s art is undeniably great stuff. Worth checking out if you’re looking for a lighter, fluffier action book.

<!–pagetitle:Death Sentence #2–>

This book continues to have a bit of problem balancing its clever concept with its somewhat snotty tone; really only one of the characters suffering from the G+ virus, which gives you superpowers even as it kills you, is worth a damn. But it’s still something different in superheroics, and worth a shot if you want something different; Titan sent over a preview which we’ve included here.

<!–pagetitle:The Crow: Curare #3–>

This is a hard book to read, and I mean that in a good way. James O’Barr’s story of an obsessed police officer and the serial killer he finally hunts down with the help of a little girl brought back to life, the Curare of the title, is a profoundly disturbing and sometimes heartbreaking book, and easily some of O’Barr’s best work. You’ll probably have to stop reading at a few points, but if you’re looking for challenging, boundary-pushing comics, this miniseries is one you need to get. Antoine Dode’s work can be an acquired taste, but that’s not a reason not to pick this up.

<!–pagetitle:Fever Ridge #4–>

Michael Heimos and Nick Rundge continue their look at World War II in Papua New Guinea, an environment that basically you will either be born in or die horribly in. And honestly, Rundge continues to carry the series with vivid, fever-dream artwork. Heimos’ script is just too dialogue heavy, but the art alone might make this a buy for some readers.

<!–pagetitle:Mass Effect: Foundation #4–>

This continues to be a fun set of one-off stories, although really more for fans of the game than anyone else. Kaidan gets the spotlight, this time, in a story about right, wrong, and consequences. If you’re a fan of the game, it’s worth picking up.

<!–pagetitle:The Massive #16–>

Brian Wood’s complex tale of post-apocalyptic living continues with a new arc… and this time, the good guys are not the people we’ve been following. Callum Israel might just be in the wrong, on this one, and it’s about to get ugly. If you’ve been looking for a chance to get in on this book, now’s the perfect time.

<!–pagetitle:Mind MGMT #16–>

Matt Kindt’s story of psychics and espionage is some of the best comics out there right now, and this issue is a good way to start reading. Well worth picking up.

<!–pagetitle:Harbinger #17–>

Joshua Dysart and Clayton Henry turn out a really disturbing issue of this particular book. An underlying theme in Harbinger has been large organizations victimizing people, in some cases children, and the book manifests that theme with Animalia, a girl who literally can’t tell reality from cartoons. The result is a book that goes to some pretty dark places in a very clever way, making this a must-read. Here’s a preview to decide for yourself.

<!–pagetitle:Justice League #24–>

Essentially the origins of Ultraman, this issue largely explains how Superman could become so evil in an alternate timeline… and it also sets up a fight that Geoff Johns’ fans probably knew has been coming since the start of this crossover. It’s interesting stuff, if you’re enjoying Forever Evil, but not really essential to the main plotline.

<!–pagetitle:Justice League Dark #24–>

J.M. DeMatteis always does fantasy well, and this issue, centered around Constantine, is a lot of fun just for exploring how he views the world… and also how the biggest bastard in the DCU will handle the events for Forever Evil. And if nothing else, the swarms of mini-Constantines are a hoot.

<!–pagetitle:Red Lanterns #24–>

Charles Soule and Alessandro Vitti actually do a good job of balancing the Lights Out crossover with maintaining their book’s own storyline, as Guy Gardner decides to become a Red Lantern for good, and Atrocitus lurks waiting for his chance.

That said, I am never, ever, ever going to take a comic book that features Dex-Starr entirely seriously. I just can’t do it. Still, a fun book that’s developing its own identity.

<!–pagetitle:Dark Horse Presents #29–>

Eighty pages, eight bucks, and not a bad page between the covers. As always, Dark Horse Presents is a blast. Be sure to check out the Neal Adams story, which stands out in particular, but again, you won’t be sorry you picked this up.

<!–pagetitle:Unwritten #54–>

The Fables/Unwritten crossover ends with a massive bang, to say the least. Fans of either series probably aren’t going to want to miss this one, as it pays off months of buildup. And, of course, it’s a fun read.
