Duke Nukem Forever is every bit as godawful as you’ve heard. After years of being a development embarrassment, it got to come out, and be a critical embarrassment. Apparently, Take Two’s solution to owning a license that was not only dated but radioactive is to… change genres and add RPG elements.
Yep, Duke Nukem is back, in a game called Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction. Which will, of course… be a top-down action RPG. Wait, what? According to CVG, this is what Interceptor Entertainment had to say about the game:
“Duke Nukem kicks ass across planets in an Unreal Engine-powered galactic adventure to save the president from an apocalyptic alien threat. All new enemies, a never before seen arsenal of devastating weaponry, and series-first mechanics, including experience points and tech trees, will let Duke rip ’em a new one in a way he never has before.”
If that sounds a little familiar, that’s because Borderlands already went this route on iOS. However, Interceptor Entertainment is not some fly-by-night operation: They remade the hilariously gory Rise of the Triad, and have made original Duke games before.
And, honestly, Duke could use a change of scene. Provided the tongue is lodged firmly in the cheek and the gameplay is good, the king could yet recover some of his former glory.
