If you’ve watched any of E!’s Live From the Red Carpet coverage in the past few years, it’s hard not to notice host Giuliana Rancic’s increasingly thin frame. After dealing with online bullying about her weight, she finally addressed rumors of an eating disorder on this morning’s Today show.
In an interview with Savannah Guthrie via E! Online, Rancic said that the reason for her weight loss is due to cancer medication she’s on, after having been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and undergoing a double mastectomy.
“It was something that I didn’t feel I ever needed to talk about, because I think weight is very personal, whether you’re underweight, overweight, whatever! It’s your business. But it became distracting,” she told Guthrie. “I would do a two-hour red carpet show and I would be so proud of these interviews, so many fun moments, and I would go on the Internet afterwards just to see 99 percent of the comments about my weight, and not about the interviews. I basically found it very distracting and I thought, ‘You know what? I think it’s time to just tell the truth and tell people what’s going on.'” Guthrie pressed on, asking Rancic, “What’s going on? Because you are, in fact, very thin. Do you have an eating disorder?”
“I do not have an eating disorder. I never have had an eating disorder,” Rancic replied. “I want to be very clear about that. In fact, I eat a lot. People love to tweet, ‘Eat a burger.’ I eat burgers! It’s not working!”
We love to make fun of E!’s Live From the Red Carpet because… well… but there’s nothing funny about ridiculing someone’s personal struggle. So, let’s all agree to leave her weight alone and stick to making fun of her for trying to get George Clooney and his activist lawyer wife to take shots of tequila on the red carpet. And for getting ignored by Bill Hader. You know, the important stuff.
