This week, Heinz Ketchup was forced to issue an apology. No, it’s not that their ketchup had gone bad or refused to leave the bottle—it’s the fact that some of the ketchup containers out there are hiding porn in their QR code.
Death and Taxes reports that Daniel Korell, a German man who was intrigued by the ketchup giant’s offer to create a personalized bottle, scanned the QR code on the back of his container and was transported to a place that was much, much different than he’d expected. That’s right, Daniel Korell was taken directly to a porn site, and he was very unhappy.
Responding to Korell’s complaint on Facebook, Heinz apologized and stated that after the promotion, which had already ended, they’d never renewed the site license the QR code was connected to. In that time, a porn company had swept in and taken it over. What this means for you (if you’re living in Germany and have a bottle of ketchup bearing the promotion) (it’s a wide net, I know) is that you potentially have a bottle of ketchup with hidden porn on it in your cabinet somewhere. And even if you’re not in Germany, you should check anyway. Actually, just scan every QR code you can from now on and see if any other companies have accidentally been taken over with adult material.
Hey, it could pay off: Heinz promised Korell that label he wanted and the adult film company that purchased the website? Well, they’re not letting him go home empty-handed either.
For their part, Fundorado took the opportunity to make a joke about Heinz’s “EZ Squirt” product before offering Korell a free year-long membership to their site:
Hi Daniel Korell, wow! Heinz has since perhaps confused the horny LILA FunDorado with his purple ketchup EZ SQUIRT ;). Anyway, of course you’re not going empty even with us out. We give you a year with www.FunDorado.com free! Just send us an email. Greetings, your team FunDorado.
