Bystanders witnessed (and filmed) this scene yesterday afternoon at an Apple Store in Dijon, France, when a disgruntled bearded man who appears to be in his 30s went full on Michael Douglas in Falling Down and methodically smashed a bunch of iPhones with a steel ball. In the above video alone, he wreaks havoc on at least a dozen devices (as well as one Macbook) causing thousand and thousands of dollars in damage, before calmly attempting to leave the store with security on his heels.
We don’t know what the man’s exact motivation was, but in a rough translate he declares near the end of his smashing spree: “Apple is a company that violated European consumers’ rights. They refused to reimburse me. I told them, give me my money back. They said no. So you know what’s happening? This is happening!” Then he smashes another iPhone.
He doesn’t get very far, however, as a second video captures the aftermath in which he is flanked by a handful of security guards, who prevent him from leaving the shopping center further. According to reports, he was held by security guards until police showed up to arrest him. It’s unclear exactly what charges he faces, but an investigation has reportedly been opened.
The below video captures the whole incident from start to finish:
