Amidst all the casting news for The Flash and Gotham, it’s easy to forget there are a lot of other DC shows in development. And one of them, iZombie, just got a pilot order.
iZombie is one of those series you may have missed, because on paper it sounds like Manic Pixie Dream Zombie; Gwen Price has to eat a brain once a month or lose her intelligence and memories, but eating a brain means you absorb that person’s thoughts and desires. Did we mention she has a go-go girl ghost and a gay wereterrier as sidekicks? It’s that kind of book.
That said, Chris Roberson and Mike Allred’s series is a lot more than the sum of its parts, with a strong sense of place and a premise that it takes in interesting directions. And now it’s going to pilot, according to Deadline:
Written by frequent collaborators Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero, [the show] is a supernatural crime procedural that centers on a med student-turned-zombie who takes a job in the coroner’s office to gain access to the brains she must reluctantly eat to maintain her humanity, but with each brain she consumes, she inherits the corpse’s memories. With the help of her medical examiner boss and a police detective, she solves homicide cases in order to quiet the disturbing voices in her head.
You might remember Rob Thomas from the sunny California teen noir Veronica Mars, so this comes off a bit like a cross between that show and Pushing Daisies. But, hey, we’ll take our zombie police procedurals any way we can get them. It beats Acronyms Solving Crimes, that’s for sure.
