In this new teaser for Leah Remini’s 20/20 interview airing tonight, the outspoken former Scientology member recalls a particularly awkward encounter from her time with the church involving Tom Cruise. In the clip, Remini says she had been contacted by a church official because Cruise had apparently wanted her to teach him salsa dancing. She arrived with her husband to find Cruise and his new girlfriend Katie Holmes accompanied by two highly ranking church officials.
Remini claims that Cruise kept “forcibly kissing” Holmes, and when she made a joke that the two should get a room, she ended up receiving disciplinary action from the church. While that doesn’t sound completely out of line with the public image Cruise projected during his relationship with Katie Holmes, obviously only a few people know the truth.
Which is where it gets interesting, because ABC News‘ Dan Harris says at the end of the clip that they’re actually going to be hearing from Katie Holmes, and “what she is now saying about Leah.” Since her split from Cruise, Holmes has remained incredibly tight-lipped about the nature of her relationship with her ex-husband and the Church of Scientology in general, most likely due to a mountain of legal documents in place to prevent her from doing otherwise.
So, what could Katie Holmes possibly have to say on 20/20? For the reasons above, it seems unlikely that she’ll disparage Scientology, and she’s got no motivation (that we know of) to defend the church and throw Remini under the bus. In all likelihood, she’ll probably end up making a bunch of noncommittal statements about things that are already obvious public knowledge, but damn if my curiosity isn’t piqued.
