There are many theories on how to fend off a bear. With grizzly bears, the suggested method is to cover the back of your neck and play dead and hope to whatever god you believe in that it doesn’t smack you around too much before becoming bored. With black bears, you’re supposed to summon your courage and fight back, and definitely not climb a tree (because they will follow you). However, if you are so overcome with fear that you can’t identify what kind of bear is barreling toward you, you can just do what this Swedish guy did and act like a total maniac.
This didn’t give the unidentified man many options when the beast came lumbering out of the woods, so he did all that he could do: roared at it ferociously and hoped that it ran away. Luckily for him, it did, and he lived to record another day.
This is probably not a foolproof method of safety, so perhaps avoid bear-infested areas as much as possible? You never know which bear might roar back.
