It’s Wednesday, and that, of course, means comic book rankings! As usual, we’ve ranked these based on accessibility and quality, so those new to comics can pick out the best on the shelves. And what took the top of our rankings?
1) Bloodshot Reborn #5
Jeff Lemire and Raul Allen take us on a little trip with Bloodshot’s seemingly cheerful cartoon pal, Bloodsquirt. Bloodsquirt, though, is something a lot worse than he seems… and may not be entirely in Ray’s head. It’s a gripping issue not least because it tackles the dark side of a killing machine like Bloodshot while asking what the cost of becoming that machine will be to the very human character in front of us. It’s thoughtful, it’s disturbing, and it’s some of the best superhero comics you’ll read this week.
2) Ms. Marvel #17
Sooner or later, no matter how powerful he or she is, a superhero has to learn you can’t save everyone. G. Willow Wilson tackles this idea in a low-key, relatable way as she and her hero, Captain Marvel, try to find her brother. There’s one sequence in particular that I won’t spoil here, where Adrian Alphona wrings the script for every tear it’s worth. This is consistently one of Marvel’s best books, and this particular issue is a great illustration why; Kamala may be able to distort her body, but she’s still a human being underneath it all.
3) Imperium #7
Toyo Harada’s defining feature? His arrogance. But what happens when the most powerful man in the world discovers he’s just second place? Nothing good, in Joshua Dysart’s smartly written supervillain story. Imperium is an intelligent take on the man who wants to rule the world, and this really digs deep into that trope and explains just why Harada is so driven… and why he’s so blind to his own motives.
4) Midnighter #3
What’s great about this issue of Midnighter, beyond the deliciously nasty vigilante hijinks, is that Midnighter’s personal life is explored in detail. Too often in modern comics, you have gay protagonists treated in a facile way; their sexuality is incidental, which is pretty far from reality. Representation is good, but character depth is better, and Steve Orlando does some superb work exploring Midnighter as a person. It helps that he refuses to make Midnighter a “credit” to gay people or whatever; while he shows some decency here, Midnighter still thoroughly enjoys beating the hell out of people, something Aco’s whirling, detail-packed layouts takes full advantage of. It’s smart, it’s beautiful, and it’s superbly done; highly recommended.
5) Dark Corridor #1
Rich Tommaso’s scripts are very reflective of their influences, namely Jim Thompson, but that cynical tone, paired with his angular, Art Deco-ish art, makes for a compelling atmosphere. If you love noir, this is a must-buy.
6) Big Trouble in Little China #14
Fred Van Lente and Joe Eisma continue their attack on ’80s nostalgia, featuring Jack Burton and his attempts to rescue the Pork Chop Express. Half the fun is Jack not acclimating at all well to 2015; his response to smartphones is particularly great. The other half is, of course, mocking the very ’80s nostalgia that got the book launched, which is Van Lente’s bread and butter. In short, if you loved the movie, the book’s everything you could want.
7) Bob’s Burgers #2
Miss the show? This is a more than suitable replacement. And now it’s an ongoing, complete with pinups and Gene rhyming!
8) The Wicked and The Divine #13
Kieron Gillen and Tula Lotay explore the line between being worshiped for your image and for what you actually want to say in a smart way in this standalone issue, following Tara. It’s a clever and sad story where even the title is a spoiler, but it’s a clever musing on what a rock star has to do when it’s the image, not the music, selling albums.
9) The Omega Men #3
Tom King and Barnaby Bagenda continue a genuinely gripping space opera. The Omega Men aren’t heroes, in this iteration; they’re anti-heroes, and it’s not just a switch that works, it’s a switch that leads to some compelling plot twists. If you’re a little sick of Star Wars, give this book a turn.
10) We Stand on Guard #2
Brian K. Vaughan and Steve Skroce continue their story of Canadians fighting a U.S. invasion over that most precious of liquid resources. No, not oil, water. Vaughn is pretty clever in his world-building here; there are hints around the edges that the U.S., although clearly the bad guys here, has its reasons to invade our neighbors to the North. It’s some smart, careful world-building, and it’s got enough action to be well worth reading.
11) Justice League: Gods and Monsters: Wonder Woman
This reinvention of Wonder Woman is clever, not least because it’s slightly less grim than the other two special, but still a lot darker than DC generally allows Wonder Woman to get. She’s not an Amazon, this time around: She’s a New God, with all that implies. It’s a compelling read, especially for DC fans, and a great take on a beloved heroine.
12) The Fox: Fox Hunt #5
The Fox finally goes toe-to-toe with Mr. Smile… and a book that’s fairly lighthearted suddenly gets heavy. But Dean Haspiel earns it, building to the climax in a way that makes what happens make sense… even if the cast itself struggles to comprehend it.
13) Jupiter’s Circle #5
This book was probably pitched as “Mad Men meets superheroes,” but while that’s a good napkin layout, in fact, it’s a bit more along the lines of what would happen if Marvel’s old soapy comics were a bit more honest about relationships. That’s not a knock; Mark Millar balances Silver Age theatrics with very real emotions, and it makes for compelling reading.
14) 8House Arclight #2
Brandon Graham and Marian Churchland deliver a fantasy comic that… well, let’s say that if you know Graham from previous works like Prophet, you know what you’re in for. That said, Graham doesn’t really bring much engagement to this very Heavy Metal-esque high fantasy about death priests and giant living ships, but Churchland’s sweeping, refined art is almost enough to make that point moot.
15) Broken World #3
Frank Barbiere and Christopher Peterson continue a story about an Earth that was supposed to die, billions fled… and then the asteroids missed completely. What’s left is… well, let’s say if you didn’t get a ticket off world, there was probably a reason. It’s a compelling book and it’s building to an interesting payoff; worth a look for SF fans.
16) John Flood #1
John Flood, 10 years ago, was experimented on by the military to take away his need to sleep. It was a smashing success, except he lives in a semi-permanent dream state and needs a camera to confirm what reality is. Oh, also, he’s a private detective. Justin Jordan’s take on the defective detective is a bit rote in places, but he makes up for it with a good sense of humor and some interesting characters outside our hero. Jorge Coelho on art also helps immensely; his clean layouts and stretched art style gives the book a sense of urgency and fun. A lot of fun. It’s worth reading.
17) The Woods #15
This book gets a bit Warhammer in a few places, which is a good look as our group of teens settles down and tries to form a society on their own. Of course, being trapped on an acid-trip world full of humans dragged there from various historical eras makes that a bit difficult. Oh, also there are astral projections. Hey, I said this book was weird, but it’s a kind of weird very much worth reading.
18) Insufferable #4
This riff on Batman and Robin, where Robin’s a spoiled celebrity and Batman’s broke, is still fairly clever, but the pacing has slacked a bit. Still, it’s fun to watch a competent, but damaged hero try and solve the case while remaining famous, and Mark Waid’s riff on celebrity superheroics is grounded enough to feel fresh.
19) The Witcher: Fox Children #5
Paul Tobin and Joe Querio wrap up their miniseries on a melancholy note; it turns out the vulpess that has been dogging his tracks is more complex than just a mother avenging her young. It’s a clever turn for the series and gives it a nice edge more in line with their first take. Here’s hoping they don’t wait too long to deliver more.
20) The Spire #2
While the setting offers a lot in the way of entertainment, exploring how a society built on genetic engineering might change over thousands of years with a high-fantasy twist, the plot barely involves its setting. Okay, so, people hated the genetically “sculpted.” That doesn’t really pay off; the murder mystery plot feels like it could have taken place anywhere. It’s a fun book, but it needs to use its setting more.
21) UFOlogy #4
As always, it turns out the town kook is right about aliens. Where James Tynion IV and Matthew Fox’s story varies is that the aliens aren’t necessarily bad, they just have a job to do, and the town kook isn’t just a harmless old guy, but a real adult with a sometimes sad history. It’s an entertaining story, helped along by Fox’s gently surreal artwork, and a nice change of pace in SF comics.
22) Bat-Mite #3
This book gains some focus thanks to Damien Wayne showing up and having his day more or less ruined by our title hero. The jokes land a bit better this time around, but this book still feels like it’s trying a bit too hard. Fun, but it needs to work a little harder to be a top-tier book.
23) This Damned Band #1
Paul Cornell and Tony Parker tell the story of a ’70s rock band that… well, let’s say that any musician should be careful when he invokes the name of Satan, and leave it at that. It’s amusing, to some degree, but there’s a little too much setup. Parker gets room to breathe, and it suits him as an artist; he avoids a lot of psychedelic cliches and shifts style handily. Still, this needs a bit more weight to stand out.
24) Detective Comics #43
Jim Gordon is still getting used to the batsuit, but this book is more interested in Bullock and police politics than Batman. Which isn’t the worst thing, but it does make you wonder why this is a Batbook, and if that’s such a point of interest, why we can’t just bring back Gotham Central.
25) Cluster #6
Ed Brisson and Damian Couceiro continue their story of disposable convict soldiers, trapped on an alien world and trying to fight back. It’s a compelling story, but as it’s gone on, the villains have gotten a little too Snidely Whiplash for the book to be fully effective: The G.E.O., our evil corporation, is evil mostly for giggles, it seems. Still, if you like SF war stories, it’s one of the best on the stands.
26) Green Lantern #43
While the idea of Hal going solo with a ’90s haircut has appeal, the reality is this book isn’t doing enough with the idea. Hal’s got a motley crew and one elaborate gauntlet, but he’s still fighting Relic and policing the universe. Not bad, but nothing new, either, and that’s a shame.
27) Lobo #9
Cullen Bunn’s plot is generic, Frank Barbiere contributes too much dialogue, and while Szymon Kudranski can draw a great action scene, I’m still left wondering where this book is supposed to fit in with the much better Omega Men also on the shelves. Not bad, but nothing special, either.
28) Age of Reptiles: Ancient Egyptians #3
As usual, the appeal here is not the complex plot, but Ricardo Delgado’s gorgeously detailed dinosaurs. If you like dinosaurs? This is the book to buy.
29) Barb Wire #2
Dark Horse’s attempt to revive Barb Wire feels very ’90s, and not in a good way. It’s not helped by the back half of this book consisting entirely of meetings Barb has. For the love of God, comic writers, stop writing meetings.
