Paramount has released an intense new Star Trek Into Darkness clip in which Captain Kirk and Benedict Cumberbatch* square off during an interrogation through a glass cage. Because putting a supervillain in a glass cage always works out…
We weren’t the only ones noticing the glass cage interrogation trope. Bleeding Cool put together a neat little collection of movies using the trope, and even drew some parallels with Wrath of Khan.
The supervillain who must be contained but then continues to fight with his words and his intellect is obviously a pretty popular trope right now. He can’t touch you but he’s right there in every other way – nothing but a glass cage would work that situation so well. [Bleeding Cool]
It’s a convenient film convention. Bars are difficult to film through without distracting viewers. In The Silence of the Lambs, Jonathan Demme and Tak Fujimoto framed the shots divergently during a conversation so that the bars were at a different angle in each shot instead of being a static object constantly in the same place drawing the audience’s attention. That’s a lot of work. If they wanted people to stop watching the bars, they should have just named them The CW.
That menacing Star Trek Into Darkness clip is below, and we’ve also found two more character posters to add to our burgeoning collection. This time it’s Chekov (Anton Yelchin) and Scotty (Simon Pegg) in some kind of danger. Star Trek Into Darkness opens on May 17th.
* I am going to pretend the villain’s name is actually Benedict Cumberbatch and not the boring “John Harrison” J.J. Abrams claims it is.
