People Are Not Amused That A Century-Old British Pub Is Being Renamed ‘The Cock And Seaman’

The Doric pub in Liverpool, an institution which has been around for more than 100 years, is getting a new name after having been purchased by new owners. AtWill Pubs, a company founded by partners Edward Atkinson and Fred Williams, will call the pub The Cock and Seaman, ostensibly to celebrate Liverpool’s rich naval history.

The Liverpool Echo documented the reaction of locals, who are not thrilled with the name change:

Avril Jones said: “Was shocked when I saw it! Why change it in the first place and to change it to this is just a laugh! It will always be the Doric.

Michelle Dewsbury said: “I live in Doric St an it’s all true can’t believe they’ve named it that tho absolute joke.”

Jily Kemp said: “Why change its name especially this one, joke!”

The new owners say they’ve completely refurbished the pub and plan to feature a rotating draft of quality local cask ales. The Cock and Seaman joins AtWill’s other ventures such as The Cock and Pullet and The Cock and Donkey because once you’ve seen one dick joke-named bar, you definitely haven’t seen them all.
