Amid heightened violence in the West Bank and many Israelis wanting to better protect themselves, a reporter for Israel’s Channel 1, Eitam Lachover, was interviewing Yaniv Montakyo, the vice president of a manufacturer of protective vests. But what good would a segment of stab-proof vests be without a field test? As such, Lachover agreed to put one on and face the business end of a large commando knife on live television.
If you don’t speak Hebrew, their exchange went a little something like this:
“You’re going to stab me with this?” Mr Lachover asked, looking at the weapon dubiously.
“Yes,” Mr Montakyo replied. “You have nothing to worry about, we are very confident in our product. This product can protect from knives that are stronger than this one. Don’t be afraid – if something happens, I’m here.”
Montakyo then proceeded to stab Lachover several times until… one of the stabs broke through the vest. He later claimed in another interview that he had stabbed the reporter in “an area with less protective material,” which really still does not lead me to have much confidence in his product.
Thankfully Lachover suffered only minor injuries, and later updated viewers at home on Twitter, writing: “Superficial stab wounds, had some stitches and was released back home. Many thanks to everyone for your concern!”
Hopefully this will be the last time he tries something like this on live TV. How does that saying go again? Something like: “Stab me once, shame on you, stab me twice, shame on me?”
