Actor/writer/director Noel Clarke has been cast in the Star Trek sequel as “a family man with a wife and young daughter”. Clarke played the boyfriend of companion Rose Tyler in Doctor Who and has written, starred in, and/or directed several British movies I’ve never heard of before today.
Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch (take a wild guess which of the two guys pictured here would be named “Benedict Cumberbatch”) has been cast in the Star Trek sequel’s villain role Édgar Ramírez auditioned for and Benecio Del Toro turned down. I can see how they would get Cumberbatch confused with those other two guys. They’re all so posh and British and delicate. Speaking of which, Cumberbatch recently told the Radio Times that he’s worried about being typecast because he had a privileged upbringing, the poor dear. He was the son of actors Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham and attended a private grade school which currently charges over $47,000 in tuition per year. He says, “Being a posh actor in England you cannot escape the class-typing from whatever side you look at it. I realized from quite early on that, although I wasn’t trying to make a class specialty of it, I was playing slightly asexual, sociopathic intellectuals.”
It must be rough having to live in a world where so many people you bump into don’t understand the difference between an ascot and a cravat. But one must push on, stiff upper lip and all that. Cumberbatch is going to be voicing Smaug in The Hobbit and playing the villain in the next Star Trek, so we’ll see if he plays those as “slightly asexual, sociopathic intellectuals”. I’m hoping he plays it all with his Alan Rickman impersonation instead:
