ABC bubble renewals include ‘Castle,’ Better Off Ted’

ABC has renewed a slew of bubble shows, ordering new seasons of “Castle,” “Scrubs,” “Better Off Ted” and the reality show “True Beauty.”

The general consensus is that “Better Off Ted” and “Scrubs” will continue their low-rated comedy partnership next season, though the industry trades are uncertain on what form “Scrubs” will take. Just one day after saying that Sarah Chalke was signed for six episodes and Zach Braff was in negotiations for six, The Hollywood Reporter is now saying that Braff is set for six episodes, but Chalke has only been approached for six, proving that it’s all rumors and nobody knows anything.

As it’s now expected that “The Law” and “The Middle” may both be sent to series, neither Donald Faison, nor Neil Flynn would be available for regular work on a new “Scrubs” season.

“Castle” is likely to get ABC’s lone renewal from this season’s class of midseason dramas, barring a “Cupid” or “The Unusuals” surprise. The Nathan Fillion cop drama got a big boost from ABC’s recent decision to pull “Surviving Suburbia” and return “Dancing with the Stars” to a two-hour format leading into “Castle.”

While the trade has no information on the new season of the Ashton Kutcher and Tyra Banks produced “True Beauty,” ABC would be wise to consider the fate of the second installment of “Joe Millionaire,” another show that relied on the contestants not knowing the core premise of the show going in.

ABC will formally announce its schedule to advertisers on Tuesday, May 19.
