Hannah Montana ‘climbs’ to No. 1 on Billboard 200

Talk about the “Climb.” Miley Cyrus’s alter ego, Hannah Montana, makes it to the top of the Billboard 200 this week after four weeks on the chart.

Bolstered by a strong box office for the movie and post-Easter sales, the “Hannah Montana Soundtrack” moves from 2-1 after debuting at No. 2 four weeks ago, according to Billboard.  First single, “Climb” is already shaping up as a major hit and is No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Digital Tracks this week.

“Making of the Band’s” Day 26 has to settle with second place for its second album, “Forever in a Day.” That title sells 113,000 units in its opening frame, 20,000 less than the “Hannah Montana” soundtrack. The only other act to debut in the top 10 is Southern California alternative rock band Silversun Pickups with “Swoon.” The title, which comes in at No. 7 marks a career high for the band.

In fact, the releases from Day 26 and Silversun Pickups are the only debuts in the Top 100 of the Billboard 200. That’s better than four weeks ago when only one album debuted on the Billboard 200. We’re also seeing other weird occurrences on the chart that we didn’t used to see due to digital exclusives. For example, Metric’s new album, “Fantasies,” came on the Billboard 200 two weeks ago at No. 105, a then career high, based on sales from an iTunes exclusive. Last week, the album fell completely off the chart and then comes back on this week at No. 76 after the album was available at all online and physical retailers- not just iTunes.

Other projects take leaps forward this week: Following her “American Idol” appearance, Jennifer Hudson’s self-titled album jumps 61 places to No. 42. Death Cab for Cutie’s “Open Door” jumps from 70 to 30, while Neko Case soars from 136 to 78.
